يشابه الذكر والأنثى وهو طائر كبير ومنقاره طويل وعنقه طويل ورجله طويل ، ولون القسم العالي بني غامق والقسم السافل بني أصفر وبه خط أسود من زاوية منقاره إلى عنقه ومن جانبيه إلى صدره ويوجد هذا الخط في جنبيه وتحت ذقنه يكاد يكون بياضا وبه ريش زيني أو ريش رقيق بلون بني أسود وصفته شعرية صغيرة طويلة حادة ممتدة من صدره في موسم التناسل
Can be found in Africa, Europe, India, China, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines. In Thailand, it can be found in every region and it is a sedentary bird which had migrated to the area. Habitat The species inhabits wetlands from sea level to 1,800 m (Madagascar), showing a preference for dense, flooded, freshwater reedbeds (Phragmites spp.) in temperate areas (occupying Typha, Scirpus and Papyrus swamps elsewhere) (del Hoyo et al. 1992, Kushlan and Hancock 2005). It also utilises lake shores, river margins, ditches, canals, brackish water lagoons, rice-fields, mangroves and coastal mudflats (del Hoyo et al. 1992, Kushlan and Hancock 2005).
هو طائر يخرج لبحث الطعام في الصباح ويحب النـزول على الأشجار في النهار أو في مجموعة الأعشاب قرب المستنقعات والترع ويبحث عن الطعام فيهاوتضع البيض كل مرة حوالي 3-5 بيض
