When Dusit Zoo was established in B.E.2481, it was preliminarily under the responsibility of the Bangkok Municipality. Until the year B.E.2496, Lieutenant General Bunyut Dhephassadin Na Ayudhya, Minister of Interior at that time considered that the Bangkok Municipality obtained less amount of budget so it was not sufficient for the rehabilitation of Dusit Zoo and the Bangkok Municipality had a lot of burden so it proposed to the government to establish the organization for flexible administration. On 15 February B.E.2497, the Royal Decree was issued to set up the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand under the responsibility of Office of the Prime Minister and on 1 July B.E.2497, the Bangkok Municipality submitted all the zoological work and properties to the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand.
On 15 November B.E.2506, H.M. The King Bhumiphol accepted the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of H.M.The King and its full name has been changed to the Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King. Currently, the Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King is the non-profit state enterprise under the responsibility of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment located within Dusit Zoo on Rama V road opposite to Chitrlada Palace.
The Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King’s organization structure is divided into 5 parts, namely, Administration Division, Academic Division, Audit Division, Policy and Planning Division, and Business Development and Public Relations Division.
The Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King is responsible for the education, conservation, breeding and arranging the zoo to be the relaxation area for public. In additions, it is also responsible for coordinating and perform any activities for the zoo. Currently, there are five zoos under its responsibility, namely, Dusit Zoo, Kao Kheow Open Zoo, Chiang Mai Zoo, Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, and Song Kla Zoo.
Mission of the Zoological Park Organization under the Royal Patronage of H.M. The King during the 2002 – 2009 Plan
1. To promote the conservation, breeding and research about wildlife.
2. To systemize the educational system within the organization to support the efficient services and be in compliance with the curriculum of the National Education Plan.
3. To thoroughly promote the educational institutes and other units to acquire academic services and to be the national institute for mental development among youths and children.
4. To develop the zoos to be the ecological tourist attractions for public and domestic and international tourists.
5. To develop the zoos to be the references for various kinds of wildlife.
6. To efficiently reTYPEer the organization structure and develop human resources.
7. To foster the quality of the zoos according to the international standard.
